Student Gratitude

"Shemine has been one of the best instructors I've ever had. The way she looks beyond Child and Youth Care and into wider systems has not only taught me about our field, but about where it sits within broader contexts. She cares deeply about our class time and brings passion, knowledge and curiosity to classes consistently. Shemine goes above and beyond the role of instructor and makes time for mentoring. She's been so inspiring to me and has shown me I can go further in this field than I ever imagined!"

"Shemine provides a safe classroom for me and my peers to think critically, be engaged, and to ask questions. Shemine supports in any way she can with intentionality behind each everything she does. She challenges us to be the best practitioners we can be"

"Shemine is a kind, genuine, and engaging educator who goes above and beyond to see her students succeed and grow as practitioners. This is displayed in how she makes herself available to support us in our learning, is willing to help if ever needed, shows care and empathy for our wellness as students, checks in with us before class, and adapts her teaching to meet us where we are at. Shemine encourages us to see the strengths in ourselves and the experiences that we bring. I look forward to coming to class each week because there are always new perspectives to gain, valuable discussions to be had, and thoughts to reflect on afterward. My favourite part of Shemine's classes is that they are interactive - she challenges us to learn with one another and think both critically and creatively. Every class is a little bit different, and the examples and narratives shared, as well as guest speakers/presentations help illustrate concepts in meaningful ways. It is refreshing!! I am truly grateful for the opportunities I have had to be in Shemine's classes as she has helped me to grow in my confidence, motivated me to push forward in my learning, and most of all has inspired me to become even more passionate about Child and Youth Care Work!!"

"I met Dr. Gulamhusein at our retreat activity at the very beginning of my CYC bachelor's degree. From then on she showed particular attention, very welcoming and interested in the human being. During my two years, we communicate among other things to suggest readings, to talk about my experiences at field placement. Dr. Gulamhusein is a very accessible person, highly educated, and passionate about her field of study. She is definitely an asset to our program and to the faculty. She represents well what a teacher should and must be."

"I absolutely loved your class and learned far more than I expect to! Your lectures were designed to make us push ourselves in ways I did not know was possible. I have learned so much about mental health based on the research I did for your course, that I have a new awareness and appreciation for it. Apart from the module, I really appreciate how supportive and insightful you were whenever one of us reached out to you. I do wish I had you for another semester :(."

"Shemine has supported me as a student with open arms and no judgment. She has always encouraged and pushed me to my full potential as a student. In her classes we did a lot of activities that enhanced our learning and brought us together as a cohort. We were able to share our thoughts and feelings about topics in her Mental Health class and not feel judged. She leads with passion, this makes me excited to enhance my work in the field!"

"I just wanted to let you know how much I really enjoy your class and that I honestly feel like I learn so much from it. I know that attendance has sucked lately and it blows my mind because you are such an amazing educator and make class actually interesting to attend - for reals!"

"I just wanted to take the time to properly thank you for the last two years. You have been an amazing professor and I could not imagine how different my outlook of the CYC practice would be if you had not been my prof. You have a way of teaching through experiences. Through your examples I have learned how things are actually applicable to my practice. Additionally, I understand why certain approaches are used, and through your teaching methods, I have learned what it feels like to be on the other end of the approach. You have taught me to have an open mind and to question in an appropriate yet critical way. Most of all you have aided in my confidence. You have challenged me and have helped me grow. You care for your students in a way that I have not seen in a lot of other profs. You know us and you want to help us grow and succeed in any way that you can.
Thanks again for everything you have taught me."

"I just wanted to take the time again to thank you for all the work you put into teaching this past semester. I cannot overstate how much of an impact your class has had on the way I operate both in practice and just day to day. Through your stories, and through the discussions you lead I have learned more than in any type of formal lecture/PowerPoint formatted course."

"I just wanted to personally message you as today's class really resonated with me and also really touched me in the sense of how compassionate you are with the work that you do and how I aspire to be as compassionate with you when I begin my line of practice."

"I wanted to say that I cannot even begin to stress how helpful and supportive you have been this school year. It has only been one week at my practicum, but the things you have taught, shared, and explained in class have already been integrated into my work (and I do not think this week would have gone even half as well if I hadn't learned from you)."

"I realized I really did not get to thank you for the past two years. I want you to know how powerful of an impact your teaching had on me in both CYC 338 and 370. I found your teaching to be so unique in comparison to other courses, and I felt both sessions left me feeling completely empowered as a student. I really appreciated your flexibility when teaching- there was something so captivating and validating by you asking us at the beginning of most sessions "how are you guys feeling about doing_______" today? or "sounds okay?" Any concerns before we begin?" Because I felt so validated as a part of my learning process, I think I took more from your courses. I was more intrigued, eager, and willing to engage with course material, lectures/group discussions and assignments. In addition, your feedback for my assignments impacted me differently than the majority of my courses. You touched on deeper concepts, my personal experiences and the connections you saw me making, all while pushing me to think harder, further and more encompassing. I have kept all my assignments and reflect back to them when I am feeling uninspired or drained during my semester.
I just think it is really important for me to tell you how great you made a few classes in my degree. You inspired me more than I could have expected."
